Musicians without Borders

Stone Flower Project with Musicians without Borders and Freedom from Torture

In the summer of 2011 SoundThread partnered with Musicians without Borders to produce and record an album with the Medical Foundation of the Care of Victims of Torture (MF). Musician Aidan Jolly had the idea to create music with torture survivors. This begin a series of workshops that use music in a positive way to support survivors of torture in their re-integration into society.

MF recognised the value of the Stone Flowers project in supporting their core counselling work. So, together with Aidan, they approached Musicians without Borders to co-ordinate, deliver and develop this inspired idea into a three year project.

The group comprises of Congalese, Iranian, Lebanese and Kurdish women and men. ‘Stone Flowers’ will perform an original of song-cycle at the Imperial War Museum North. The diverse group members bring their own words and musical inspiration into the creative sessions where the ideas are being developed into a song-cycle.

“A moving and truthful journey with expressions of protest, peace, love and hope. An original song-cycle in English, Lingala, Farsi, Kurdish, French and Kikongo, influenced by folk, jazz, classical, spoken word and hip-hop music.”
