A project to celebrate the new Northern Line Extension with the communities who live and work above the route between Battersea Power Station, Nine Elms and Kennington Tube stations.
This project I worked with Projection Teknik, which was established in 1992 by Nick Azidis, an Australian born new media artist and projection illusionist specialising in large-scale projections, in both digital and analogue mediums. and has compiled a diverse body of work over nearly three decades as a producer, content developer/creator and technician.
A daisy-chain of high-density light beams illuminates the new stations and paints the route of the tunnels in the sky to create the Line of Light. A selection of buildings along the route light up with a series of visual projections, accompanied by soundscapes available as downloadable podcasts, created by Sam Jones of SoundThread with local groups and students from the Royal College of Art to make a specially commissioned audio ‘album’ of the area.
I do a lot of these projects, which attempt to exemplify through music and sound the stories and experiences of people who live and work in an area. My role is to sort of filter what is being said on the streets, what music is being heard or created, and what we’ve all been working on in the rehearsal room. And then it’s to try and find a way to reflect that through a soundscape. Recorded with local musicians spoken word artists.
